This is an welcome step and if implemented properly, it will be great help for addressing any customer grievances.

Here is the news :

NEW DELHI: Empowering India’s 500 million plus mobile users, the country’s telecom regulator has decided to set up an online customer redressal mechanism, providing a platform for dissatisfied consumers to express their complaints against their service providers.
Put simply, any customer can log on to this web-based system, that will be maintained by Trai, to register complaints, violations or any other grievance against their mobile operator. This independent platform will work on a real-time basis, implying that the operator in question will immediately get the complaint, a top Trai official told ET.
This official also added that this system would enable Trai to monitor if customer grievances were being addressed. “We can then see as to what per cent of customer complaints are addressed,” the Trai official explained.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has come out with another consumer friendly suggestion for Telecom companies in India. In its recent recommendation, it has asked telecom companies to charge user per second basis. In this new charging scheme, mobile user will be charged per second basis instead of existing pulse basis. Presently, telecom companies charge pulse basis and 60 seconds s considered one pulse. Even if a mobile user talks for hardly 20 seconds, he is charged one unit, for 60 seconds. It has been a revenue earner for telecom company, but it was unfair to mobile users.

Taking cue from TRAI, Systema, which has launched its telecom service recently in Delhi, has started charging user per second basis.

DELHI : Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has launched its telecom services in Delhi on Thursday under the MTS brand.
SSTL, a 74:26 JV between Sistema of Russia and the Shyam Group of India, is offering a per-second billing tariff plan. It has positioned itself on data platform with its launch in Delhi.
New telecom licencee MTS launched its high-speed wireless internet services under the brand name, MBlaze offering speeds of up to 3.1 mbps. Sistema Shyam is expecting to source a significant share of revenues from its data transfer services.

The operator is present in six out of the total 22 telecom circles and plans to launch its services in Karnataka and Mumbai by the year-end.

Finally, Tata Teleservices ( A Tata Group Company) has entered into offering mobile services in India based in GSM technology too. It will no doubt create more choice for telecom subscribers in India. As for mobile subscribers in India, most probably, they can not now name the all operators in their circle. Also, even though new players are joining the fray, few things remain the same :
1. High SMS cost while roaming
2. Concept of roaming.
3. Charging for incoming while roaming in India. I am still wondering why should there be incoming cost or higher outgoing cost while a subscriber goes out of its own circle ?

With new playres in GSM market when they have been sharing towers among themselves, most probably, it is high time for TRAI to recommend to do away with roaming.

Here is the new about Tata Tele venturing into GSM:

MUMBAI: For the Tatas, offering mobile services on the global system for mobile (GSM) platform is a “compulsion” and not a choice. The absence of a spectrum roadmap for code division multiple access
(CDMA) operators and the limited allocation of airwaves has forced Tata Teleservices (TTSL), the group’s flagship telecom company, to offer services on the GSM platform as well. Source and whole story.

Very soon, petrol and diesel prices will be decided by Oil companies as per crude oil prices internationally or may be by whim and fancy by the oil company directors!

But as per latest news, it is going to happen. Consumer might have to pay more or less according to crude oil prices as the price might fluctuate as per crude oil price only.

Here is the report :

New Delhi: The Government will consider deregulating petrol and diesel prices in six weeks, Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said on Friday.
“The issue of deregulation is being discussed and it will be put up to the cabinet for a decision,” he said after taking charge of the Petroleum Ministry for the second time on Friday. Source and Complete Story.

So, you may not be able to predict your fuel budget. And if cooking gas is also freed from government control, than most probably, monthly budget by home-makers would go haywire.

More choices for Delhi and Mumbai phone subscribers! As per recent news, Systema Shyam Telecom Ltd. with brand name “MTS” is going to launch CDMA services in Delhi and Mumbai by December 2009. Already Mumbai and Delhi have all major Telephone Service Providers and with entry of MTS, ultimately mobile subscribers will be benefited.
Though number of operators are increasing, but messages like “all channel in this route are busy” still keep coming while trying to dial from one operator to another. The problem of POI ( Point of Interconnect) increases during peak hours. So, while launching new services, SSTL should have enough POI with other telephone service providers so that it is useful to new or existing mobile subscribers.
Here is the news :

KOLKATA: Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) , a JV between Russia’s Sistema and the Shyam Group, is targeting a 10% market share in the Indian mobile turf in the next five years. Unperturbed by the slowdown, the company is committed to its 22-circle expansion plan by mid-2010, including rollouts in the high-stakes Mumbai and Delhi circles by December. Complete Story.

Finally, TRAI ( Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has come out with directive to Value Added Service providers to take explicit consent from subscribers before enabling any accidental subscription to Value Added Service. Click here for the link to TRAI Press Release.

And here is the news in Economic Times:

NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator Trai on Monday directed operators to seek explicit consent from mobile phone users before activating any value-added services (VAS) such as call ring-back tone and hello tunes.

The directive comes in the wake of increased consumer complaints over services activated without the subscriber’s consent. Trai has mandated that operators maintain transparency and communicate clearly the details of the services being offered to the subscriber through SMS
, fax or e-mail. Source and full text.

Most probably, TRAI did not mention that many Mobile Operators and VAS operators activates some subscription based services without subscribers consent and charge them unless they don’t complaint against in their customer care. I have explained this scenario earlier in did you know section.

But this is an welcome and timely step by TRAI and I hope this will benefit mobile and land-line subscribers from paying few extra charges to telephone operators.

The excerpts of the news here :

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday voiced what consumers may have felt for years, saying “mobile and cable operators are looting people”.
Clearly, the agony to consumers subjected to inflated bills from mobile service providers and local cable operators has not escaped the notice of the apex court, particularly that of Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan. Source and Complete news here.
