Finally, the totally illogical charging by Telecom Operator of SMS while roaming is coming down as per recent news. Presently Vodafone charges almost Rs.3.40 paise per SMS while on roaming, which is much higher than one minute of voice call! Other operators charge almsost the same!

Here is the news :

NEW DELHI: From May, telecom companies may reduce text message tariff by 40% for customers outside their home network after being warned by the  industry regulator for overcharging. At present, a phone call is cheaper than an SMS for roaming customers, because competition has forced telecom companies to keep call rates low.

When a customer is travelling out of his home network, roaming tariffs apply. For instance, a Airtel subscriber in Delhi, using the services of his operator, while in Mumbai, he would pay roaming charges.
Most leading operators charge between Rs 2.40 and Rs 2.50, if a customer sends an SMS on roaming. From May, maximum charges for an SMS on roaming would be Rs 1.50. ..  Source
